Corrosion is the degradation of metal or alloy by chemical or electrochemical reaction with its environment. Corrosion has huge impact on engineering metals like mild steel, N80 steel, J55 steel, which are used in various industrial sectors. The direct cost and indirect economic losses due to corrosion can be reduced by applying certain corrosion control techniques, which are proper design, electrochemical protection, proper materials selection and use of paints/coatings and inhibitors. Among the various techniques to prevent corrosion of metal, use of corrosion inhibitor is one of the best known methods and widely used in industry. Mild steel due to excellent mechanical properties and low cost is commonly used in many industries as constructional materials. In industry 20% sulfuric acids are used in the pickling of mild steel for the removal of oxide scale from it before undergoing subsequent processing, such as galvanizing and other techniques. In petroleum industry, N80 steel is used in manufacturing tubing and casing. 15% HCl is used for acidizing oil well for enhancing oil flow. In most of the oil and gas production industry J55 steel is used, which in presence of CO2 undergoes corrosion by forming carbonic acid after reacting with high chloride containing water. Because of the aggressiveness of acidic solutions, metals corrode severely, which results in terrible waste of both resources and money. A corrosion inhibitor is often added to the acid solutions to minimize the corrosion of metal during these processes. The selection of inhibitor is controlled by its economic availability, its efficiency to inhibit the …show more content…
