In this aphorism above, Bennett is explaining that without experiencing emotion one cannot fully gain knowledge. Going through the experiences and feeling the emotions that arise from an event are what are necessary for the brain to recall the memories that are created from the experience. Through emotions not only are we able to recognize the existence of the knowledge but, we are able to fully comprehend the reason for the existing knowledge. Without emotion, we are unable to reason through our decisions that help us acquire knowledge. It is all a chain where emotion is steering the direction of reasoning to get us to knowledge. An example to explain this chain would be wisdom. Wisdom is gained through a lifetime of experiences that as human beings we have dictated the direction of our knowledge with emotions. You live and you learn is quite important when understanding this aphorism because as young adults not every decision we take is the best. We are entirely blinded by a single emotion that does not allow us to think outside the box and as a we grow older we are able to recall these memories of when we were once blinded by a certain emotion. The process of emotion has two main components which is the direct experience, and the reflection that follows through. The connection between emotion and reason is exceedingly important due to the rationalizing that is introduced once emotions have been processed. It is impossible to gain knowledge without reason and emotion. The natural law began with emotion before reasoning. Knowledge as we know can only be obtainable if emotion is present.
