The most significant source of power on the ranch is Curley because he can do whatever he wants to anyone on the ranch without any consequences or getting fired because the boss is his father. In chapter two of the book Of Mice and Men, Curley walks into the bunkhouses and starts to talk to George and Lennie “ the new guys”. Curley is jealous of Lennie because he is big and strong and starts to get mad and angry at Lennie because he won't talk back to him. When Curley leaves Candy talks to George and Lennie about Curley and how he won't get fired from the job because his father is the boss. In the text it says “ The old man sat down on another box. “ Don't tell Curley I said none of this. He’d slough me. He just don’t give a damn. Won’t ever get canned ‘cause his old man’s the boss.”[Steinbeck 26]. This quote shows that Curley will never get fired because he is the boss's son. …show more content…
Lennie is still smiling about the ranch they will be moving into but Curley thinks that he is laughing at him so he attempts to fight Lennie. Lennie is held defenseless for the first couple of hits because he was to frightened to defend himself. In the text it says” Lennie looked helplessly at George, and then he got up and started to retreat. Curley was balanced and poised. He slashed at Lennie with his left fist, and then smashed down his nose with a right”[steinbeck 62-63]. You can infer from this that Curley thought that Lennie wasn't going to fight back because if he did he was going to get fired. After this part Lennie fights back by catching Curley's fist and squeezing it and ending up breaking his hand. Overall, Curley has the most significant source of power on the ranch because he is the boss's son, and if anyone does anything bad to him he can potentially get them
