A discourse community is a group of people involved in and communicating about a topic, issue, or in a field. When I was eighteen, I got a job at the St. Johns Medical Center working as a Pharmacy Technician. When I started working at St John's, I went through a two-week training period where learned everything pharmacy. At first, it is difficult to get the hang of everything. Joining the Pharmacy discourse community taught me determination, accountability, and leadership. The same skills that I learned in the pharmacy will convey into college by helping me have a mature mentality also teaching me how to be successful in college.
One of the most critical skills I acquired while working in the pharmacy was determination: determination will be a helpful skill in college that will allow me to be mentally mature and successful. In the pharmacy, I encountered large quantities of narcotic medication as you may know narcotics are a regulated drug. Which meant I remained held accountable for all the narcotic medication that I sent and took up to the floors. If something went missing or wasn’t delivered correctly, I could not only lose my job but also I could have ended up in jail. The hospital held me accountable for the medication that I had in my profession. In college, I will not have someone looking over my shoulder telling you must do this like this or you cannot do that. I must hold myself accountable for my work in college and remain to do it accurately and following the rules. I believe this was a helpful lesson for me as it made me mature mentally and successful not only in work but it will allow me to be successful in my coursework in
