In early times, little did the colonists know what trouble awaited them in the new world. When the colonists came to Jamestown they never thought that the life style would be as hard as it turned out for them. As the colonists started to come to the Americas they weren’t prepared as in how much food to bring, not enough people with the right occupations, or medicine to keep them healthy. When choosing people to come to the new world, they didn’t bring the people who knew how to farm they brought gentlemen. Gentlemen were non-working rich men who refused to do any of the work. Oddly enough a large majority of the men were gentlemen. In early Jamestown, we wonder why so many colonists died. The main problems were starvation, disease, and Indian relationships. The first problem of the death of so many colonists was starvation. For long periods of time there were droughts (Lost Colony 57).The lack of rain caused it to be too dry for food to grow. Because of drought and lack of food, many times they did not have enough food to survive the winter (Lost Colony 57). Dennis B. Blanton said “ Because of the adjacent river and creeks became brackish as water level rose,” limiting the reliable sources of water. Because of starvation, disease, and bad Indian relationships. Since the colonists weren’t accustomed to the New World's foreign illnesses, they died of disease (Fausz 63). Because they didn’t know how to farm the land, they died of starvation. Lastly the people didn’t treat the Indians nicely, so they got attacked (Fausz 63). As the colonists found out the New World wasn’t as easy as they anticipated. Even though it was hard, the people tried to make the best of what they had.
