Intro – The resources in this world are not shared closely enough. 20% of the population is consuming 80% of the earth’s resources which results in the other 80% (most southern countries) consuming only 20% of the resources; this is devastating. The majority of the population have no resources so they are left with a bad paying job, no education, and a bad quality of life. However there are many people of this percentage that have a job in a sweatshop where they are treated very poorly, and paid very less. In this source, the point of view is from a person who supports neo liberalism and industrialization and assumes that the quality of life will get better and will help the southern citizen’s rise above poverty. The sources has some good points but many points could also counter the source. Though industrialization will help the quality of life it will not help the standard of living. Also following neo liberalism will not help because of what is happening with the ‘race to the bottom’. One of the few things that can help the southern citizens is one of the three sister branches.

Argument 1: It is absolutely true that the south needs to industrialize to achieve the quality of life even if they need help. Industrialization takes money and not every southern country has the economy to do so. This is where the three sister organization can help like the world trade bank or the imf can help countries out with financial problems. The imf is an organization where if there is a country that is having financial problems the imf will give a loan that can be paid back through their conditions. It was created post WW2 to assist in the reconstruction of the global economy. The United States has the largest percentage of voting rights for the imf and contributes the largest quota. A example of the imf that has helped a country financially is in Jordan. The country had a high unemployment rate and was struggling to pay its loans. The country then agreed to a contract with the imf. With the money the government reformed privatization, taxes, and made easier trade polices. A few years later the country was admitted to the WTO and they brought down the overall debt payment to a manageable level. This is an example of how strong the imf could be and how stable they are as productive member of the gloabal economy.
Argument 2: Southern countries embracing the principles of neo liberalism to rise above poverty as stated in the source will be almost impossible with the ongoing race to the bottom. The race to the bottom is a situation in which workers are getting paid less and getting treated worse by the day. This is because of multinational companies and northern companies in competition with each other which results in cheaper clothing/products which then leads to the mistreatment of workers. An easy and inexpensive way to manufacture goods is through the use of sweatshops. Most sweatshops around the world are factories with very poor working conditions and have very little pay-off. A horrific example is the accident in a plaza in Bangladesh. This factory was a garment working factory with workers aged as
