When people think of America, the first thing that comes to their mind is freedom. Even in the present day, we pride ourselves on the amount of freedom that Americans get to enjoy on a daily basis. The foundation of the USA is built on the concept of democracy, in which we hold the idea that anyone and everyone can exercise their voice when it comes to government. Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of the united states, stated,” We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Thomas Jefferson is saying that equality is a God given right as well as no one should be denied happiness. He could not have worded the basic beliefs of American society better. When creating the building blocks of America, freedom was the base. It was the concept that no matter who you are or where you come from, you have a voice. This was done to exercise the right that the colonist felt was withheld from them when under the British.

The colonist felt that the British were unreasonable and that they should not have to pay the outrageous taxes forced upon them when they felt the wars outcome had no effect on them. The colonists of America were in the mentality that it was the British’s war; therefore it was British’s problem. Soon the Great Britain forced even more taxes on the thirteen colonies including taxes such as the Navigation Act, and Townshend Act however the colonist resisted. Many of the acts included high taxes on any imported item that one would use on day to day basics such as paper or house hold items.
