The sight of the dead bodies swinging in the breeze only made the crowd shout more due to the terrifying thought they would be next. This is exactly what happened in The Crucible. The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, centers around the Puritan town of Salem which is known for the Salem Witch Trials. The play revolves around young Abigail Williams and a group of adolescent girls who end up accusing many townspeople in fear of getting in trouble after the girls were seen dancing in the woods. In order to quench their desire for revenge, gain power, and save themselves, the girls continuously accuse people in Salem. Although fear may not seem like a factor in how people make decisions, fear is a significant influence on human behavior.

In many situations, fear causes the truthfulness of a situation to remain hidden. Their claim suggests that people base their decisions on what they believe in without any input from fear. Giles Corey and John Proctor are two of the many characters that stick to their beliefs, despite their fear of death, and end up abiding to their morals until their demise. While this may be true, Giles Corey and John Proctor’s actions were affected by the fears they had if they continued to live. Corey and Proctor were more afraid of living with the guilt of selling out their friends than of death. The two men went with what they feared least and allowed themselves to be slain.
