Unit 5 Test The amendments were made to give people certain freedoms. The amendments give the citizens of the U.S. certain rights that can’t be taken away. The amendments can help accused criminals but it can also be overlooked in certain cases. The First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment and the Fifth Amendment impact people’s rights against and puts limits on government power. The First Amendment impacts people’s rights and limits the government's power. The first amendment states that the citizens of the U.S. have the power to freedom of religion, freedom of speech, the freedom of press and freedom of religion. The Fifth Amendment are the miranda rights. The miranda rights are the rights that are given to people once they are arrested. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can not afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you.” (criminal.findlaw.com). This quote is showing how the miranda rights help many citizens. The government appoints an attorney to the person if he or she can’t afford one. This is benefitting the citizen because with the attorney, he has the chance to prove himself innocent. It is also saying that the person doesn’t have to admit to anything. They don’t have to say anything about the crime or tell anyone he or she actually committed the crime. This also limits the government because they can’t force the criminal to give up information. The miranda rights also prevent the government from sending the criminal straight to prison if he or she doesn’t have an attorney. “Questioned at the police station by two police officers, he was not advised of his right to an attorney nor his right to remain silent. After two hours of interrogation, he signed a written confession to the crimes.”(Supreme Court Case Studies 99). This is also showing that the miranda rights would have protected the man. The man would of had the right to remain silent and wouldn’t of had to
