Freedom What does it truly mean to be free? Some people would define freedom as being able to do whatever you like, whenever you like. America is labeled as ‘The Land of the Free’ but we Americans still have many laws that we must abide by so can we really be categorized as free? In the Oxford dictionary freedom has multiple meanings; the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint and the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. I personally think the true definition of freedom is being at peace with yourself and your environment. America became ‘The land of the free’ after defeating Great Britain in The American Revolutionary War. Thousands come to America to leave their country because they that will finally be free. America is not what I would consider a great place to relocate in search of freedom. Though the war was won in 1775, America was still forcing African-Americans and Hispanics to be segregated from what Caucasians. Anyone who was not of the Caucasian appearance were forced to use separate bathrooms, water fountains and sit in the very back of the bus. America has taken away the freedom of their own people simply because they didn’t like their skin tone. There were many acts of civil rights rebellion to make the government aware of how they were treating anyone that wasn’t of the Caucasian race. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, among many other took a stand against the slavery they were enduring. Many lives were lost but the fight for freedom lasted for many decades. Finally, slavery was abolished when Congress passed the 13th amendment on January 31, 1865 that was ratified on December 6, 1865. Slavery is now against the law in America but it is still very alive. Africa-Americans will never be free. It is the people who are the judges, police officers and public officials that will never view African-Americans as equal. There will always be a fear in African-Americans and Hispanics when
