The Hardships of Football In the novel, Friday Night Lights, H.G Bissinger appeals to his audience’s emotions in order to persuade to his reader that the act of worshipping football can reprioritize young football players, causing them to direct their attention away from school and their daily lives. Bissinger incorporates these strategies in order to motivate the audience to see the negative side of playing high school sports. The distractions that these student athletes are facing can be directly related to the mental and physical aspects of the sport. The glorification of football can also cause society to shield the players from the hardships of reality and the importance of a good education. Throughout the novel, Bissinger suggests that the overpowering pressures of football can cause players to endure permanent physical effects as a result of the many detrimental situations that come with playing the sport. An example of this is shown through the character Daniel Justis. After playing for the Permian Panthers he retired an All-State champion, but all his sport victories came with a price. …show more content…
By reprioritizing players, football can divert the attention of athletes away from the values of a good education and important situations in their daily lives. Ignoring reality is also present when student athletes are forced into a program that affects the their bodies, mentally and physically. Bissinger successfully illustrates that the unnecessary health risks and distorted futures of high school football players are unreasonable and destructive side-effects that can result from a Permian Football experience. Bissinger uses these examples to motivate his audience to shift their values accordingly, in order to prevent the further downfall of football
