Grendel, a terrifying monster as portrayed in beowulf is not as he seems. Grendel is a misunderstood creature, who undeservingly lost his innocence, and is portrayed as the human image in the book Grendel. The author portrays him as a lost a child which in turn makes the reader empathetic towards him. Grendel was not originally a monster, he was undeservingly made that way. Grendel, an antagonist in Beowulf is feared as a horrible monster, but in reality is just a lost soul trying to find purpose. Grendel is portrayed as the human image in Grendel to show readers what happens when one does not have purpose or know the meaning of their life.

He is displayed as the human image because of the innocence he maintained, the unknowing of the harsh world, and the inability to cope with feelings effectively. He portrays the human image because much of society is the like Grendel. The attack of Grendel by the people of Herot shows how human actions can change someone. He is the human image in this sense because after horrible things happen to people they change, they become cold or they become hateful. Grendel, portrayed as a child shows what hurt can do to someone. Grendel portrays the human image because children are unknowing of the harsh world and are very innocent until their environment alters them. In this case, Grendel's environment completely changed him. He became a completely different creature. He went from childlike and curious at heart, to displaying the most primitive of human qualities. His looks are the reason he is attacked and shows true human nature. Humans tend to dislike those who are different and those that are not attractive. By the people of Herot attacking Grendel, the author is showing the flaws in human nature and society. Grendel undeservingly was attacked and turned into a monster. He retaliated and Herot deserved what they
