Montag’s Purpose of Murder

Did Guy Montag kill Captain Beatty in the action of self defense or to preserve something lost? Captain Beatty died a painful death as he was enflamed by Montag and the flamethrower. There was a hard fought battle of two minds leading up to this action. Some would say Montag killed Beatty for self defense, but there was more running through Montag’s mind as he pulled the trigger.
How has modern society made the killing different? In this new modern society the world has changed drastically. The art of thinking and learning has died off. Books are forbidden to cancel teachings of the past. The government has their country brainwashed. People have lost their feelings and are ruthless towards others. The modern society will stop at nothing to obey the government and make sure society is their definition of perfect.

They day of the murder Montag had come to a realization. He had determined that in his actions he had done something wrong. He knew that the murder he committed was a bad thing. As he was thinking about this he also felt feelings of relief and justification. Even though he had never intended to murder Beatty, He knew that in doing so he was saving a chance at bringing modern society back to life. His actions had set the world free of the bad man that was Captain Beatty.
