Health information exchange is health information that can be shared electronically with hospitals, doctors, patients, and insurance companies.
HIE gives the patient the ability to be more in control of their care. The patient is able to access their medical information through online portals and can share their information as they see fit.
Examples of the different functions of HIE are:
• The exchange of health information electronically between providers and others.
• Gives the health care providers and the patients the ability to access and share the patient’s medical information electronically. Which improves the speed, quality, safety and cost of the patient’s care.

There are three types of HIE. These are directed exchange, query-based exchange, and consumer mediated exchange.
• Directed exchange can send and receive information electronically to different healthcare providers.
• Query-based exchange is a way to find and/or request information on a patient from other providers.
• Consumer mediated exchange gives the patients the ability to control their own health information. They are able to transfer their information between providers and monitor their own health.
