American Hunger Hunger occurs around the world and is a national issue. Many countries deal with food insecurities which affect children, elders, grandparents, and the infirmed. Among the countries dealing with hunger is America, one of the most powerful nations, which comes as a shock to many. I watched the documentary Hunger in America, which discussed the hidden issue of hunger in America. The face of hunger in America looks different than that of other countries. Many people think hunger is directly correlated with the poor. However, hunger in America is often dealt with behind closed doors as an effort to keep this a secret. Individuals feel ashamed of this and don’t want others to know of their issues. Food insecurity occurs when individuals don’t know how they are going to afford their next meal. This means they must choose between paying for necessities like water bills or going with little or no food. As a result, families are greatly affected by these choices. When the economy started to slow, many individuals making up the middle class were laid off. Meaning, those that were well off before started to struggle. Parents found it harder to provide for their families and were often concerned about providing the next meal for their children. Many suffering from hunger are ashamed and don’t want those around them to know of their struggles. I feel Americans need to be more educated about issues such as hunger and poverty which take place in America. We think of ourselves as a powerful nation, which provides the vast majority of food for the world, yet we don’t know about the hunger issues within our own country.
