I , personally could not grasp a complete understanding of this film at first. Hushpuppy’s father was trying to prepare her for the end of the world, which I later found out was not the end of the whole world but the end of her world. He in his own way abandoned hushpuppy in an attempt to help but it did not really help. She was not allowed to cry or show any emotion. Not being able to show emotion hinders her for growing up the way she needs to but it also helps her learn to remain calm and poised under all circumstances. While watching this film several questions came into play for me. For instance, did wink love his daughter? What issues were highlighting in this film pertaining to the black family. Hushpuppy’s mother abandoned her and her father when she was a child. As a result Wink was forced to then become the mother and father in her life. Single parent mothers have a very difficult time raising boys and girls on their but men have a much more difficult time being a single parent to a young girl. In most families it is seen that the father is usually the absentee parent that is not the case for hushpuppy. Wink made the decision to the only parent hushpuppy could truly count on for guidance. While being the primary parent in his daughter’s life, Wink tended to place some very important developmental things to the “backburner”. One scene of the film really grasped my attention. Hushpuppy was afraid during a very bad storm and began to cry, her father failed to comfort her in the proper form. Instead of being consoled, she was scoled at for breaking the rules. That to me is just an example of why he could not attend to her emotional needs. Hushpuppy was in great need of her mother at that moment. Her mother could have provided the comfort that she so desperately searched for. Wink’s way to teaching was based solely on surviving and surviving
