A character can be depicted as either immoral or immoral based on their actions. Their actions can be portrayed by how they treat others or how they communicate with others. In Sir Authur Conan Doyle's "A Study In Scarlet", Jefferson Hope's character is evaluated as a conscientious criminal. Jefferson Hope should be judged as a thoughtful criminal with moral reasoning.

In order for someone to be a criminal the would have to be charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage. But if someone were to be a thoughtful or conscientious criminal like Jefferson Hope, they would have certain drive to commit a crime. And for the character to have a moral reason like Hope one must be concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and must know the right and wrongs of humans in general.

Jefferson Hope should be judged as a thoughtful criminal with moral reasoning because of his crime of murder against Drebber and Strangerson. Though Hope is thoughtful and is set on vengeance of Drebber and Strangerson he still commits the crime of murder along with saying "they were guilty of the death of two human beings – a father and daughter—and that they had – therefore forfeited their own lives" (81). The Mormons actions lead Jefferson to decide "he could … devote his life to revenge since nothing else was left to him" after Lucy's death (75). The Mormons were also described as "an enemy armed with mysterious powers" (67). The moral reasoning that drove Jefferson murder the two Mormon men was that they forced Lucy into a "hateful marriage" and she would "pine away and die within a month" (76). Another reason for Jefferson's hatred while still moral for the Mormons is when they made John's "brown face [look] so savage"
