Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore is mass shootings correlate with mental illness. Due the mass shootings that have taken place in the United States, many believe, that (1) mental illness is a cause of gun violence, (2) gun control will not thwart another major shootings such as (Charleston, Aurora, and Connecticut), (3) based on a persons psychiatric background it is possible to make a prediction on gun crime, and (4) these heinous shootings show the crazed acts of the mentally ill. All of these have seemed to be deemed true in particular instances, but it is interesting to watch how, race/ethnicity, cultural stereotypes, and social class come into play. These issues become warped, when mass shootings some how equate for all gun crimes, and the mentally ill are no longer looked at as having a medical condition, but as a violent threat to society.
