America vs Mexico, brawl of the newest countries. However, was America justified in going to war? America was not justified because we just elected a new president, brought slaves into Mexico, even though they were abolished, and got mad at Mexico, and were angry at Mexico for feeling threatened and protecting themselves. The Mexican American War started on May 9, 1846 when American troops were shot at north of the Rio Grande. Sixteen Americans were killed in the process. The war took place in Mexico City, the Rio Grande, and in disputed territory in between the US and Mexico (Phil Roden, 317). Americans were invited to come to Mexico, they did not have to come,but they did and so did their slaves. Mexico had already abolished slavery but we brought and kept them anyway. Mexico was not happy with this and America was mad at Mexico for not allowing them to hold slaves (Sumner, 329). American citizens deliberately defied and ignored Mexico’s laws. Americans would bring slave and signed the contract but would not adhere to the laws of Mexico but would take the land and have slaves (Sumner, 329). “Decreed the abolition of slavery.” (Sumner, 329) This means that slaves will not be allowed at all whatsoever. America was not justified in going to war with Mexico because slavery was abolished but Americans still brought them. They brought the punishment on themselves.
America does have some reason to go to war with Mexico. Americans were strong believers in Manifest Destiny. Like President Polk, most Americans believed that America should extend to the Pacific Ocean (O’Sullivan, 323). America already had Texas, so why not extend to California. California has the “Anglo-Saxon foot” on it already so we should just take it (O’Sullivan, 323). However, countries cannot steal land from another country just because our influence is already there.
