Currently obesity is extremely widespread in America; so much so that even low income families are obese. Unhealthy American diets have been caused by the cheap and convenient “bad” foods that have taken over the food industry, which can be solved by targeting the companies that produce these foods with higher taxes or fees from their work. For the sake of the future of America, we must recognize this food epidemic and reform it before everyone ends up obese. According to a survey of high school and college students, more than fifty percent of them eat fast food or processed foods more than once a week. This way, those unhealthy foods are prefered by many as a food alternative to foods like fruits and vegetables. This is especially impactful on lower income families. Since they have so little to spend, they are forced to resort to the fatty fast foods as a daily meal. In Food Inc., a documentary on the source of our food, a family is introduced that is in this exact situation. A family of four is forced to eat fast food for almost every meal because of their financial status. It gets to the point where the father is diagnosed with diabetes and has to take expensive medicine. As a result, their situation gets even worse and their livelihood is threatened. No only does this harm the consumers, but it also helps the companies that produce these foods grow larger and larger. People like this family have no other choice but to continue eating fast food or ultimately die trying to fight it. As these companies’ influence grows, so does the amount of people who eat them; creating a never ending cycle that destroys the American diets and gives profits to large
