To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee suggests bias can cause divide within race and social classes through outcasts and criticism in society. Throughout the novel many families in Maycomb are seen as outcasts in society because of their race and or social class. In the town there is a new teacher named Miss Caroline who does not know of those in the community who come from a poor household. She tries to give Walter Cunningham a quarter to buy lunch and does not understand why he is refusing it. Since the school children know about the Cunningham families situation Scout steps in to help Walter; “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” (Lee 26). During the trial the whites are sitting on the bottom floor of the courtroom while the blacks are sitting on the balcony of the courthouse. Mr. Dolphus Raymond is a white man who married a black women, and they have mixed children which causes his family to be criticised wherever they go. Jem is explaining what mixed children look like to Scout; “They don’t belong anywhere” (215). Having mixed children makes the Raymond family be criticised because in this period of time the blacks and whites stayed separated. This is because it was illegal to have and interracial marriage at this point in time. Dolphus Raymond was one of the first in Maycomb to have an interracial family which was an easy way to criticize him. After the trial Mrs. Merriweather, a town's lady, was aggravated at her servant Sophy because of her reaction to the trial; “You [Sophy] are simply not being a christian today. Jesus Christ never went around grumbling and complaining...” (310). Sophy is receiving harsh criticism because the black community, which Sophy is apart of, is very upset about the ending of the Tom Robinson trial. They are upset because everyone in the town, black and white, knew Tom should have won the trial whether they wanted to admit it or not. Those who are different or do not fit into society receive excessive amounts of criticism because they are easily picked on. In conclusion, bias in the community
