A Pit Bull is not actually a breed itself but a category of numerous breeds and mixes based on similar characteristics. The American Pit Bull was first created in England in the 19th Century by breeding English Bulldogs with Terriers. They were introduced into America in the 1860’s and became known as American Bull Terriers or Staffordshire Terriers. They were used as herding dogs and trained to protect livestock and families.

No dog has locking jaws. They are not more aggressive towards humans than other dogs. In the temperament test run by the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. (ATTS) American pit bulls got a better temperament ranking than collies, beagles and even golden retrievers, ranking fourth out of 122 breeds. Pit Bulls are not more dangerous than any other dog. The National Canine Research Council (NCRC) states “there is no evidence from the controlled study of dog bites that one kind of dog is more likely to bite a human being than any other … no group of dogs should be considered disproportionately dangerous”. And yet, this is exactly what BSL has done.
Pit Bulls should not be banned because they are a danger to the public. Studies analyzing the effectiveness of BSL in reducing dog bites and attacks carried out in Spain and Great Britain concluded that their “dangerous animal acts” were not at all effective in stopping dog attacks. In fact, the Spanish study found that it was the breeds not covered by the BSL – German Shepherds and mixed breeds – that were most responsible for the bites and attacks.
