Prison violence, a growing issue that is rarely discussed and needs to finally be addressed by the government and other organizations. In recent years “. . . assaults rose by 34 percent. . . a 32 percent rise in attacks by one prisoner on another. . . and a 43 percent rise in assaults on staff.” This rise in prison violence is a real issue that no one wants to talk about due to the fact that people do not have much concern for the prison systems. Throughout the world, prison violence has become a rising issue that needs to be dealt with for the better of the prisoners and correctional officers. The rise in prison violence is due to underfunding, understaffing, and overcrowding of correctional facilities. To tackle this rising issue correctional facilities can improve and upgrade their training of the staff, secure more funds to get more facilities for the prisoners, and separate the inmates based on the crimes they have committed.

Over the past seventeen years there has been an increase in the amount of people that have been going to prison. There has been a dramatic increase in the incarceration rates “. . . it is reported that state prisons are operating between 1% and 16% above capacity, while Federal prisons are at 31%.” Overpopulation of the these prisons has been leading to an increase in prison violence. This is due to the prisoners being upset with the living conditions of the prison. Overpopulation of the prisons has been an increasing problem because since there has been budget cuts to prison systems, there is not enough room for them to stay in. Leading to an increase of the prison violence, which causes more inmate on inmate and inmate on correctional officers
