Professional Athletes…..Overpaid? Ever dream about becoming a professional athlete, making millions of dollars? “The average salaries for professional football, baseball, basketball and hockey players all tend to be in the $2 million to $5 million a year range” (Edelman). Steps need to be taken to limit the amount of money professional athletes make. Americans need to stop supporting the players by paying hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, for tickets to watch these athletes. They don’t deserve to get paid this much money. Actually, professional athletes compared to firefighters, police officers, military personnel and the President of the United States are greatly overpaid. “Consider this: Lebron James made $71 million last year,i” and the President of the United States earns $400,000 per year (Edelman). Police officers and firefighters are lucky if they get paid half of what a NFL player makes. “Firefighters who pull little kids out of burning buildings didn’t make this much” (Edelman). The military personnel fight for our freedom and keep our country safe, yet they too don’t make close to what professional athletes make. Athletes make more money than people who care for the country and save lives, even making more than the person who runs the country. Athletes are getting in trouble because they have too much free time; their names on the front page of the paper getting arrested. Their careers that last only a fifth of what an average person’s job span is. Stop buying their jerseys or sports memorabilia, as this only adds to their salary. It’s time to lower their salaries and help support the average people who deserve more pay for their daily jobs. It’s time to help the people who aren’t making headlines because of the sport they play, but because of the countless hours they put in to help make our country
