Today, guns are a huge controversy in the United States and is increasing in importance as more crimes are committed every day. The right to bear arms should not be taken away from citizens because it is written in the Constitution and would therefore, be unconstitutional. There is a need for more control of weapons in the crime filled cities and places in the US. People need to be able to defend themselves whether they are on a farm in the middle of nowhere or if you are in a city and there is high crime rate.
First, the history of the second amendment and why it was written. When we came over to America we were under the power of Great Britain. When the Revolutionary War was going on, Great Britain was fighting and invading the thirteen colonies and the many battles fought brought great destruction to the small towns and cities there. While this is a good reason, the second amendment was written to give us the right to protect ourselves from the invasion of another country and corruptions of governments. But, as our country grew and changed, our society changed as well. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” (U.S. Constitution. Amendment II, Sec. 1). The second amendment states that a “well regulated militia” which means a well trained militia should have the right to bear arms, not every single person that passes a class on how to use guns or someone who just buys a gun due to gang activity. None of the people buying guns today are buying them because they are worried that a foreign country will try to invade us or if our own government begins to corrupt. They buy them to protection from other people and most of the time the people that have them for protection don’t even know how to use it
