Born April 19, 1721, Roger Sherman was born into a wealthy family. His parents were William and Mehetable Sherman. The young boy read much as he grew up, due to his father having a rather large library. He was enrolled in a private school, but his reading skills were so superior to the other students that he soon left the school. After leaving school, he began to study under a minister named Samuel Danbar. This man encouraged young Roger to study the following: history, religion, mathematics, law, and astronomy. Roger grew up and became a shoemaker. After his father passed away in 1741, he continued this trade, but he did not make enough to support his mother and brothers. He decided to go live with his brother in New Milford, Connecticut. Because of how brilliant this young man was, he obtained the job of the county surveyor. With this job he earned enough money to care for his brothers and mother, as well as owning a shoe store in New Millford. He began writing soon after this. He wrote and published many almanacs, which were useful to farmers, because they contained facts about stars, the planet, and weather. He believed that God should be present in our government. Without God, our government would crumble quickly as a result of the sin of mankind. We need God in our government, because we are only human. Because we are human, we are bound to make mistakes. Having God in our government does not mean that we won’t make any mistakes, but it does mean that he will guide us in our decisions if we are diligent to follow him with all of our heart. Through the actions of our founding fathers, we can see that they truly trusted God. This is evident in the writing of the Declaration of Independence.
