Salsa is a social dance which is enjoyed by many Latinos. According to salsagente, Salsa originally came from Cuba. As reported by Casa Museo, salsa encompasses a variety of instruments in order to give it that unique touch. The salsa instruments include the conga drums, bongos, timbales, maracas, cow bell, and the clave. Also, it states that it was in the 1940s and 50s, that Cuban musicians had a huge influence on the New York music scene. Over the years, I have heard from a good number of Latino’s who have said that Salsa comes from Puerto Rico or New York. I, however, always believed that Salsa originated from Colombia. My brother, like every other Colombian, believe they Dance Salsa better then Puerto Rican's. I honestly do not think one is better than the other. Both countries have different cultures, therefore, they dance it different. Salsagente states that salsa in Colombia is amazing and involves incredibly fast footwork and tight spins. It is also mentioned that Colombians dance salsa really close. The bodies of the two dancers are so close its as if they are glued together. According to Salsabrosa, Puerto Rican style Salsa can be danced “On 1” or “On 2”. It also states that it is extremely fast and complicated solo footwork. A great deal of shoulder shimmies are incorporated into the dancing as well. Salsabrosa also mentions that Cuban style Salsa is characterized by Afro Cuban style body movement which includes body isolation and hip movement. Although, Cuban style Salsa does not have many fast spins. Instead it says that the movement is very circular as opposed to linear and partners tend to travel around each other.
