In School Shootings Put Teachers in New Role as Human Shields, Julie Turkewitz talked about the shooting that recently happened at a Florida high school and how teachers are no longer just teachers. On February 14, 2018, Nikolas Cruz, a 19 year old boy, opened fire in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and killed 14 students and 3 staff members (Turkewitz, 2018, p. 1). Although this shooting was a tragedy, Turkewitz focused on how this shooting has changed teachers’ roles “from educator and counselor to bodyguard and protector” (2018, p. 1). In this article, Turkewitz interviewed 9 teachers, who reveal their thoughts on this topic. Mr. Jose Vilson, one of the teachers the author interviewed, talked about how school districts do no prepare them enough for school shootings and how “instruction on topics such as conflict resolution and first aid would be useful” (Turkewitz, 2018, p. 1). Even though I love everything about teaching, I do not like how I would have to choose between my life and my students’ life. I think that there should definitely be stricter gun laws and things put in place to make teachers and students more safe. I think that if every student were evaluated in depth, then it would make schools safer as a whole. Thus, I believe that this topic is a very important issue that should be discussed in the classroom. That is why I decided to integrate this article into the curriculum for a 4nd grade class. How I will do this is create an activity related to this topic for the students to do, using this article as a source.
