Scout “comes of age” throughout the novel in many different situations with various characters. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee demonstrates Scout’s “coming of age” by illustrating and describing many different events that show her maturity. The book develops at a steady pace as Scout becomes more and more adult-like. Scout starts out at six years old and acts like an adult at only nine years. By the use of secondary characters throughout the novel Harper Lee shows Scout’s progression in her loss of innocence.
Scout asks if she can visit Calpurnia which shows she is curious and maturing. Jem, Scout and Calpurnia walk out of the church. They are on the sidewalk next to the Radley’s place and Scout asks Calpurnia “Cal, can i come to see you sometimes?”(167). Scout wants to learn more about Calpurnia’s life but Scout used to hate Calpurnia which shows Scout’s outgoingness. Being outgoing is what many adults do, and what Scout asking Calpurnia was the most outgoing thing Scout could of done. Radley back to his house from her house which shows that Scout is trying to become a ladylike figure. Mr. Radley has just saved Jem and Scout from Mr. Ewell, and killed Mr. Ewell in the process. Mr. Radley asks Scout to help bring him home and Scout responds saying “Mr. Arthur, bend your arm down here, like that. That’s right, sir”(372). Scout respects Mr. Arthur now that he has saved her life. Scout thought that Mr. Arthur was a bad person until this moment. Scout treats him like a normal person and walks him home. Walking him home with both of their arms wrapped together shows the people of Maycomb who were watching that Mr.Arthur isn’t a bad person but a gentlemen, while also making herself known as a lady. Which shows Scout’s respect to Mr. Arthur by treating him like a gentlemen. This is the final step in Scout growing to be recognized by the people of Maycomb as a
