In book one of The Odyssey Odysseus’ son Telemachus realizes that if he wants his mother and citizens of Ithaca to remain safe and loyal towards his father he needs to rise up to the occasion and for the time run the kingdom. When he proclaims to the citizens, “ I’ll be lord of my own house and servants, all that King Odysseus won for me by force” (1. 450-460). Many laughed during his proclamation to the citizens such as the suitors who were in a contest for his mother's hand, but a handful admired that young Telemachus wanted to rule the kingdom until his father returned. After his speech he was returning to his quarters when he encountered an old man named Mentes. Mentes expressed her admiration of him as she did to his father many years back. Telemachus questioned her further and she prophesied that Odysseus will soon return home to his beloved Ithaca. He then invites old Mentes into the palace where his mother declares that she will soon marry a suitor due to little hope that her husband will soon return until Telemachus reveals what Mentes told him.
