Some people may think in the 239 years of America being an independent country, we have progressed and moved forward and we, American citizens, still today continue to thrive, while others think we have regressed and moved backwards and aren’t improving at all. The Expansion of American Society is a very debatable topic, because some people think it brought America closer to founding ideals, but others think it did just the opposite and it brought us further away from those founding ideals. There are several reasons why people went west. Some to seek new lives and opportunities, and others to just gain money. Manifest Destiny, for example was the westward expansion of the U.S. Americans believed it was a duty to expand their land. The Louisiana Purchase is an example of Americans expanding their land. This purchase gave the U.S control of the Mississippi River and the port city of New Orleans. The expansion of American society brought us closer to the founding ideal of liberty. The Abolitionist Movement played a big part as well. The Abolitionist Movement was a movement to end slavery. This movement started in the early 1830’s and the overall goal was to get rid of slavery entirely and make it illegal to own slaves. The Abolitionist Movement ended in the 1870’s. The positive accomplishments that came out of this movement was, it started to inform more people about the evils and cruelty of slavery, and newspapers and books were published, which spread the word and informed many people. The Abolitionist Movement brought our country closer to liberty because the whole point was to let slaves have freedom and end slavery for good, and that is what liberty is, freedom. To conclude, the Abolitionist Movement brought our nation closer to liberty because the movement was all about trying to free slaves and spread the word about how bad slavery
