The Absolutely True Diary of a Part - Time Indian is a novel by Sherman Alexie that is mainly about hope and joy, about who has it and who doesn’t. It is also about how life can be a bit challenging when hope and joy leaves and reappears. Junior, the narrator, deals with trauma and lives between an Indian and white world. This is why Sherman Alexie uses the aspect of strong emotion, sadness, in multiple ways to create the most interest in the novel. Sherman Alexie uses sadness to create the most interest in the novel with the loss of Junior’s dog. For example, in the novel, it states, “Dad pulled down his rifle and bullets from the closet. ‘Junior’ he said. ‘Carry Oscar outside.’ ‘No!’ I screamed. ‘He’s suffering’ Dad said. ‘We have to help him’” (Alexie 10-11). This means that Junior has to bear with the sadness of the loss of his dog, for the fact that his family is poor and can’t afford to take Oscar, the dog, to the vet.
