The Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution
In 1773 the British imposed the Tea Tax on the American colonies. The Tea Tax gave the British East India Tea company a monopoly on tea sales in America. The Tea Tax compelled the Samuel Adams and The Sons of Liberty to plan the Boston Tea Party. During The Boston Tea Party the Sons of Liberty went on board the British ships Dartmouth, Eleanor, and the Beaver which had the tea aboard them. They took out the tea from each of the ships and dumped 342 chests of tea in the Boston Harbor. This enraged the British because the tea thrown overboard was worth 18,000 British pounds which in today’s currency would be about a million US dollars. The first act was The Boston Port Act and it was established in 1773. The Boston Port act was a trade act. The Parliament of Great Britain shut down the Port of Boston and did not allow any ships in or out of the port. The second act was Massachusetts Government Act was passed on May 20, 1774 and it revoked the Charter of 1691, restricted the colonists from electing officials, and limited the amount of town meetings that the colonists were allowed to have. This and the other intolerable acts were punishments as a result of The Boston Tea Party. The 3rd Intolerable Act was the Administration of Justice Act. This act stated that British people accused of crimes would be tried in England and not in America. This would make it difficult for witnesses to be present because they would have to travel overseas. It also would allow the possibility of British criminals to flee justice. The 4th Intolerable Act was The Quartering Act. This act allowed British soldiers to live in colonists homes at no expense of their own. They were allowed to live in their homes and eat their food without
