Good morning/afternoon Mr. Webster and 8 Mahoney. The word community encompasses many shared beliefs, values, and relationships found within societies or religious groups. All people rely on the values and morals of community at their times of greatest need. The idea of community is evident throughout John Boyne’s novel, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The theme of community is displayed through Pavel’s actions when Bruno was in need. Pavel’s reaction to the situation in which he found himself has allowed me to reflect on times when I have assumed the role of Pavel by providing support to others in need. These reflections allow us to understand and appreciate the importance of community and how it is necessary to the lives of people.

The theme of community is displayed through the event in the novel in which Pavel’s community values provoked him to help Bruno after he injured himself whilst using his swing. Pavel reacted to this situation by helping regardless of the consequences. “Pavel had been peeling potatoes while standing at the window when he saw the incident take place. I believe this has a strong connection to the event in the novel, in that we support someone in need, just as Pavel did. By sponsoring Don, we are providing him with an opportunity to live a better life and to experience the benefits of the community values that have been instilled in my family. There is another connection between these two situations, which is the feeling of gratefulness that is shared by both Bruno and Don.
