The Test of Time ‘A wrong is undressed when retribution overtakes its redresser”(Poe 174). Edgar Allan Poe wrote the story “The Cask of Amontillado”. It follows a man named Montresor and his supposed friend Fortunato. Fortunato offended Montresor before the story began, leading to the plot being Montresor’s plan to kill Fortunato. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has two families that despise each other. Despite this, the titular Romeo and Juliet fall in love. They have to deal with their feuding families’ issues. Many authors use their characters and the experiences they have to reveal the human condition. In “The Cask of Amontillado” Edgar Allan Poe communicates the human condition by having his main character exhibit a part of the human condition. Shakespeare mainly puts his own knowledge of human problems and his these affect his characters. “He fights as you sing/ Pricksong”(Scene 4 Act 2 20-21). Tybalt is being praised in this scene. This is an example of both power and social acceptance. People know Tybalt is powerful and he is accepted for it. Poe also reflects the parts of the human condition by way of his characters.
