During the 17th century, William Harvey was the first to fully understand the circulation of blood within animals. He did this by testing on live animals for medical research. With this said, The use of research animals in the laboratory did not become widespread in Europe until the 19th century. Around 1896 the National Institute of Health took an active role in encouraging proper care and use of laboratory animals. Almost 100 years later, PETA came around mandating more rules against any type of testing on animals. Thus causing testing of certain things to become much more difficult. Going back to William Harvey, he was the man who showed that it is okay to test on animals if it will help further the understanding of the human body. Animal testing allows scientists to have more of a scientific understanding of the biology of animals, humans, and hows medication and different chemicals affect their systems. Many people believe that animals should not be tested on, based on the fact that they cannot consent to what is being done to them, and that it is morally wrong. Although this is a valid reason, the pros of animals testing easily out way the minimal amount of cons that can come into play. An example of the pros outweighing the cons would include the flu vaccine. Animal activists would try to make the point that injecting the test animals with a disease is inhuman, and should not be done on moral reasons alone. Now from a scientist point a view; when they are able to view how the disease reacts in the bloodstream, and the immune system of the animal, they are able to fully create a working vaccine for said disease.
