Between June 10 and September 22, 1692, 20 people were put to death in Salem, Massachusetts. These 20 people were put to death for the terrible crime of witchcraft. The accusations started with Ann Putnam and ended with much more. The killings stopped once the mayor’s wife was accused of being a witch. These trials didn’t only happen in Salem. This also spread to New England where thousands more were killed. The question is what caused the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria of 1692? The false accusations, the division of the town, and desperation for power.

In June 1970, 110 females were accused of witchcraft. Majority of these women were married, between 41-60 years old. The people that accused these women of witchcraft were also majority female. Unlike the women that were accused these young ladies were mostly single, and between 16-20 years old.(Doc B). In Salem Village 1692, The people that accused others of witchcraft grew jealous of the people of more wealth. The people of more wealth lived on the East Side, the people who were less fortunate lived on the West Side. They accused them of witchcraft to gain power over them.(Doc E). People grew jealous over others for many different reasons. Some of the females were jealous of the ones that were married because being married back then was considered a really big deal. They wanted to drive their husbands away from them is my guess. The poor people grew jealous of what the wealthy had. So they thought to accuse them of witchcraft, would ruin their reputations.
