“Physical courage, which engages all danger, will make a person brave in one way; and moral courage, which defies all opinion, will make a person brave in another.”-Charles Caleb Colton. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is a huge factor in many of the characters throughout the novel. Along with the courage that the characters shown throughout the book, they also showed fear, but were successfully able to overcome it. These important characters are Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, Atticus Finch, Arthur (Boo) Radley, and Jeremy (Jem) Finch. Although at the time the book was through the view of a young girl looking back on the past, it’s shows a lot of the attention she gave to her surroundings and how the world was for her growing up in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. Throughout the novel of To Kill a Mockingbird, these characters have shown courage in many different ways. From Scout and Jem defending their father, knowing it would get them in trouble, but continuing to do so, to Atticus doing what no other man would by defending a black man, to Arthur( Boo) Radley saving the kids from Bob Ewell. Throughout the book these characters have shown courage for doing acts that society would have frowned upon. Each character has grown to see how the world is, but were able to push through and defy what others thought was right. As Scout and Jem reached the age of maturity, through their courage,they learned to never give in to what others say and to prejudge a person before knowing who they truly are. Atticus had courage to stand up for what he believed in as well as being able to teach his children what’s right. Boo Radley was able to come out of his shell, and learn to trust again after many people lost faith in him and believed that he was evil, as well as come back into society's view after so many years in
