Tulsa Race Riot Commission
On May, 31 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a man named Dick Rowland was accused of raping a woman named Sarah Page. Ms. Page dropped the charges and Mr. Rowland was sought after by the white violence mobs that had been formed. The tension was building between the whites and the African Americans that were scattered in front of the courthouse, the white mob members were attempting to disarm any African Americans. A white man approached an armed World War 1 veteran and attempted to take his weapon from him and a shot was fired from the gun. This started the violence in the Tulsa, Oklahoma race riot.
The violence and injustice only progressed from that point. Dr. A. J. Jackson surrendered from his home while his hands were in the air, saying “Here I am. I want to go with you.” The officers fired 2 shots at Jackson and he died. The officers then covered his house in gas and oil. Another injustice that occurred was that in the year of 1919 more than 75 African Americans were hanged included in that number were more than a dozen African American soldiers. There was immense damage done to the neighborhood of Greenwood. We would reach out to any family that was affected by the race riot as well as encouraging them to reach out to us. When we have established the families that were affected we would look into their families story and if we see that a child wasn’t given the proper education or no education at all then we would offer them a scholarship. This would restore justice to those families by making sure that the generations of being uneducated due to the Tulsa race riot ends with the generation of kids that we are
