“Resilient individuals are able to calmly and rationally look at the problem and envision a successful solution.” What Is Resilience, an article by Kendra Cherry identifies the major characteristics of resilience. Unbroken, a biography by Laura Hillenbrand describes the life of Louie Zamperini and two fellow men who are stranded out at sea, and how they deal with their situation. After reading the texts it is clear that Louie’s key characteristic of resilience that was most essential in enabling him to survive was problem solving.
To begin with, Louie knew from prior knowledge how to aid Phil. In “What is Resilience” it states, ”When a crisis emerges, resilient people are able to spot the solution.” Louie instantly took charge and helped Phil with his injury. Problem solving is key to survival; in

He always immediately knew what to do and stayed calm, Phil somewhat contributed, while Mac never had hope or reacted. Phil is more like Louie because eventually he began to talk and prayed that they would stay safe. It is stated in Unbroken, “As Louie and Phil grilled each other, Mac usually sat in silence.” Mac is less like Louie because never once was he hopeful and barely talked to the other two men. He just sat around waiting for day that he would finally leave the earth.
Louie’s problem solving skill of resilience was the key to his survival. It revealed his underlying values of how it was important to not give up and that everything had a solution. What is Resilience says,”Resilient people are able to utilize their skills and strengths to cope.” Without this trait he wouldn’t have been able to live the 47 days he did or help his friends. Something to take from Louie’s story is to use resilience in stressful situations, and use your problem solving abilities to its extent.
