Blood dripping from a laceration, shells flying ubiquitously, dirt blotched all over their body and the only thought they could contemplate is, “Will I survive?” World War I was the world’s first global conflict and resulted in over 37 million casualties. It obliterated territories, buildings, artworks, and most importantly destroyed lives. Almost a whole generation of young men were decimated due to global conflicts. In order to deal with the hardships of war, some men turned to poetry to express their thoughts and feelings. Many had to find a way to express the horrors they saw which eventually led to improvement in their poetic techniques. Their poems produced vivid images of the hardships they faced during those four years; even though the men were able to convey their emotions through poetry, those that survived the war were psychologically traumatized and forced to endure the …show more content…
Yet, many individuals in America forget to celebrate Veterans Day for its essential reason. After contemplating about the war poets and their message, the most overwhelming emotion I felt was hope. Hope that one day there will be an end to all the violence around the world. Hope that people of different race, and beliefs can get along. Hope that many individuals won’t have to give up their lives for us anymore because we would have come up with another solution, instead of violence to solve our problems. Lastly and most importantly, hope that individuals will not be self-centered and forget those that have fought and sacrificed their lives for us. In the present, with a world filled with many beliefs and ideas, the only emotion we can possess is hope that one day we will overcome our differences and work jointly to broaden our
