The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built on March 26, 1982. This monument was meant to recognize all the women and men who have lost their lives in the Vietnam war. The VVMF wanted to build a monument that showed all the people that have died and decided to make a competition and find the best architect in the world to come up with an idea for the monument. The winner of the competition was Maya Lin, a student at Yale university. Maya Lin’s idea wanted people when they came to the wall, to see all the names listed and when they looked at the wall, it was going to be for the people and not for politics. She said if the people coming to the wall can accept the deaths of the peoples, then the people were able to see the wall as a happy recognition and not a sad one. The wall is supposed to signify honesty because people are coming to terms with the death of loved ones and It became a sacred place of healing and reverence as she intended.The controversy …show more content…
Walking along the wall, and seeing all those names of the people who fought for our country and died. I remember looking at the wall and I felt so sad for the families of the veterans because there were so many names, it was hard to stop and look at each one. I loved the color of the wall because you were able to see your own reflections and others around you and how the wall went in chronological order so it would be easier to find a name of a specific person. I don’t feel as though that Maya Lin’s idea was bad but I liked it because of its simplicity and how it was all most buried into the ground. People criticized her idea because of how she looked and I was very shocked that people wouldn’t like the idea since she was a woman and also not a veteran. This memorial has helped America, not see the bad side of the Vietnam War but also people to see what the soldier did for your
