Everyday millions of pounds of trash reach landfills each year. We will soon have nowhere to place all this garbage, and that is why recycling matters. In a a film called Waste Land filmed in Jardim Gramacho, people called pickers sort through the trash and see what recyclable materials they find. An artist named Vik Muniz wanted give back to the people that work there, because when he grew up he lived in very similar living conditions. Vik plans to make portraits with the trash from the land fill and sell them. Then Vik will donate the money back to the landfill. The film reveals the bad living conditions of the pickers and many of them are not happy, but Vicks positive influence goes a long way with the pickers. As Vik enter the home of the pickers their faces light up with huge smiles. They get so excited when they find out they get to keep their portrait. Vik completely surprises the pickers with their portraits. No one expected to get their own personal photograph. The visual composition only shows cheerful face and happy laughs. Pathos comes into effect here and it gives off a happy vibe. When the pickers smile as they do, people will see them as content people. While the visual composition reveals their happiness, it also reveals their proudness. When Zumbi get his photo he says to his kid “Check it out. It’s your Dad” (Wasteland). Zumbi get so excited when he gets to show off his photo and he is very proud of the photo. He wants his kid to see it and know that he made art that looks beautiful. All the pickers act proud as they receive the photo, because now they can show of their great work. Almost instantly all the pickers try and find a way to hang the photo on a wall, or find a place to set it. They are all honored they created art with Vik, and they want their friends and family to see it. Overall the film wants the audience to see the pickers as proud and happy people at the end the
