Some media stories have implicated War veterans in violent crime and have generated coverage that reflect mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Veterans and their supporters are concerned that the media has portrayed them to be crazy or dangerous in many situations in our society.

Findings: The media portrays veterans as broken by their service to our country but worthy of government benefits and social assistance. When the media portrays veterans as active members in society, their social engagement is often negative because of their injuries or mistreatment.
The article corresponds to the justification of compensating high level of benefits to accommodate the needs of war veterans.
Application: Veterans are not at fault for risking their lives for our country and their service connected issues should not define them. The article also argues that a substantial amount of well-deserved benefits for veterans partly derive from their interpretation as having suffered from their service in combat.
