A man who has, in today’s terms, committed genocide should not be celebrated in the eyes of any reasonable person. Columbus Day, a national holiday, should not be celebrated in the United States (US) for three simple reasons, honesty, morality and exclusion. These three issues are the leading factors on why we should not celebrate Columbus Day.
In all honesty, Christopher Columbus did not discover America. Across the US, our children are taught that Columbus discovered our noble land and claimed it for his country. Anyone with a good enough understanding of the true discovery of America, and a basic set of morals, understands it is not right to honor Columbus when Native Americans occupied this land when he stumbled upon it. In addition, Columbus treated Native Americans very badly. Even in present day, Native Americans are mistreated and excluded from most American privileges. Out of respect to Native Americans, we must begin teaching children about Columbus Day and the creation of our country.
