Eliminating Racism
Racism has been and continues to be a very critical issue found by many in today’s society. Many measures have been taken to prevent it but it remains to be a controversial because of the particular determination by those within society to eliminate such an evil. There are many people who strongly believe that racism cannot be eliminated, while others think that it can. Thereby, the topic of discussion this essay will focus on how racism can be eliminated or even prevented in today’s society. One should learn more about their community and become more exposed to other cultures/ethnicities, there should be anti-prejudice and racism groups also, people should be more open-minded.
Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another or the belief that another person is less than human because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes. Racism has affected many people in different ways. Most of these effects are negative and have impacted lives for the worst. Racism was one of the prime reasons for slavery. People think they are better than one another and treat each other poorly. Its believed that the color of your skin defines you as a person. "The stultifying intellectual loneliness of my 1950s and '60s upbringing was dictated by my looks," (Colemon, 28). Such stigmas need to be overcome.
Firstly, if one learns more about their community and gets more exposed to other cultures/ethnicities we become more knowledgeable of our surroundings. As a society this can make a difference by spreading a message of love, peace and respect. The more we know about one another and have more knowledge the more understanding we become for instance, “McComas also said that there was no indication that race played a factor in the shooting of the two men although it may have” (Sheriff Tom McComas). Neighbours feel threatened with having coloured neighbours and feel like they have no option but death to kill them. Just because they are of a different race they feel endangered. Getting to know your community as a whole is a great start to eliminate discrimination.
Next racism can be eliminated in many ways, anti-groups eliminate racism by raising awareness and by having outreach programs. With having anti-prejudice and racism groups more people would be aware of the consequences that come along with the dis gusting deed. The rates of racism have decreased rapidly in Canada but still does exist. “In the past year we have been having more students stand up against racism” (Principle Lawrance,56).You may not see it around as much as it was seen a few years back but it still is around. There are many schools in the province of Canada that have extracurricular groups and clubs which fight against racism and try to make a difference. Having anti-prejudice and racism groups would be a great way to eliminate racism.
Society ought to be more open-minded when it comes to racism and discrimination. Society is brought up with a set of beliefs and values throughout their lives. They tend to surround themselves with people who have the same beliefs and values which makes them think
