In creative writings, authors often have a style of writing which adds powerful components to enhance their publishings. In the stories, “The Truly Unfortunate Captivity of Just Crane” By: Percy Marvin and “The Tell Tale of Heart” By: Edgar Allen Poe, both authors have a style of writing which is often quite mysterious and daunting. In both author’s writings you can find various forms of literary devices such as strong diction and imagery. With the use of these literary devices, readers are often persuaded to feel a certain way and a mood is heavily addressed. Marvin and Poe establish an eerie and suspenseful mood with the use of strong diction which help portray imagery in their stories.

Justin Crane was kidnapped and held in an elaborate Château. Crane then writes about his horrifying and gruesome experience in a journal format. Crane comes upon many mysterious workers, frightening medical deformities, and much more while he is trapped at the castle. The text states, “As we finally came to the door, there was no stopping my profuse sweating and shaking. The servant turned to me, placed his hands calmly at my sides and said: “are you ready to see, my child?” What I encountered next with the most gruesome sight I've ever seen- one straight out of the most sublime of scenes from a Walpole novel. Trying my hardest to hold back the surging vomit in my esophagus, I beheld infected corpses hanging from the ceiling- everywhere. At least ten, perhaps more, males and females, mostly of middle age. The bodies were dangling from great metal barbs; one could consider them as giant-sized fish hooks.” (Marvin, 4). Here, Marvin is describing the haunting experience Justin had encountered. He explains what Justin had saw, felt, and how he reacted. The phrase, “The bodies were dangling from great metal barbs; one could consider them as giant-sized fish hooks.”
