Numerous unprofessional college athletes have a full scholarship to help pay for living needs and college expenses. College athletes are already being independent for other things besides finding a career. College athletes should also have a side job for getting their own money instead of getting money for playing a sport. College athletes should not be paid due to a few important reasons. One reason college athletes shouldn’t be paid is because they aren’t professionals. Horace Mitchell stated, “Student-athletes are amateurs who choose to participate in intercollegiate athletics as a part of their educational experience, thus maintaining a distinction between student-athletes who participate in the collegiate model and professional athletes …show more content…
Kieran McCauley stated, “If so, that certainly seems strange and borderline unfair. No offense to the athlete who plays a sport that doesn’t air on national television, but it doesn’t seem acceptable that they get paid the same amount as the college football player competing in the National Championship with 33 million people watching them. “ America has their favorite sports, and if someone in college plays an unfavorite then they wouldn’t be paid as much as football or basketball. Someone may work just as hard, but still could be paid a lot less. Due to the favorite sports in society, college athletes shouldn’t be paid.
Some people may think that paying college athletes will keep them out of trouble, or help them with living expenses. Paying college athletes certainly doesn’t keep them away from trouble. If anything it makes them feel comfortable to get money handed to them, and it won’t matter what they do outside of sports. It doesn’t help them whatsoever either. They get the money just for doing the sport. They need to be independent. Therefore, college athletes should not be paid. Paying college athletes should not be allowed or should be banned. When you think about it, paying college athletes could lead into some very difficult problems in the future.
