On May 7 1945, Estanislada Gonzalez Gaspar was born in a little town named Mesa del Campanario in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. In Mesa del Campanario there were not any hospitals or doctors, she was delivered by a “partera” or midwive. Her father, Ciriaco Gonzalez Garcia, worked in the field and her mom, Primitiva Gaspar Torres, was a housewife. Estanislada, also referred as Li, was the fourth oldest out of thirteen children. Li and her siblings were baptized on the Sunday within the week they were born. Mesa del Campanario was far, isolated, surrounded by hills and land that was used for agriculture. She had to take care of her siblings. Males were allowed to go to school but females dropped out as soon as they knew how to read and write. Due to Campanario not being civilized enough, they believed that moving to Valle de la Cruz would be more civilized. Valle de la Cruz was not civilized as how they expected it to be. According to Li, kids were taught as “donkeys”. They were not taught at a government school, instead they were only taught how to pray and to do their first communion and confirmation. Since Li, did not attended school, she had to stay home to do chores. Li was responsible for her little sister Julia, who was born premature. Li had to wash Julia’s diapers, feed her, put her to sleep, etc. Her childhood was based on taking care of her siblings. She describes herself as a “talkback”, because she would talk back to her mother, but not her father. Li, admired a woman in her town named Doña Celsa, she wanted to be like her when she grow up. Celsa was a judge in the town and the citizens respected her. Li wanted the same respect; she wanted to be the authority. They were hired at a department were diplomatics from different countries lived, such as U.S. and France. Maria Luisa got married and Li continued working, but by then she had days off. One of her days off, she was invited to go out with one of her coworker’s daughters. When Li got to their house, she was surprised by the T.V. She had never seen something like that. There was people inside of the box! She even looked at the back of the tv to try to understand what was going on. Also going to the movie theater was something new for Li, she didn't have a good impression of it, since she didn't like the loudness of it. Her means of transportation were buses and the metro since only those who could afford a car could have one. Later she became a nanny where she met a Brazilian chef, whom taught her how to cook. She developed a passion for cooking so she started working only as a nanny and chef, she didn't do house chores
