Ethics are needed in an organization because people care about ethics. Individuals want to be treated fairly. Establishing a code of ethics or guidelines for behavior lets everyone know what to expect, not only in terms of how they should conduct themselves but also in terms of how they can expect to be treated. Even though the idea of a corporate code of ethics can be traced back to the 1960s, it is only in the last half of the 20th century that big business, higher education, and government entities have adopted a written code of ethics as a fundamental step in establishing a managerial structure .
